Overseas Registration Exam Preparation
ORE Part 1:
Part 1 of the examination is designed to assess the applicants’ ability to apply the vast amount of knowledge they have acquired to real-life clinical situations. It is composed of two computer-based examination papers
- Paper A, which evaluates the clinically applied dental science and clinically applied human disease.
- Paper B, which looks at aspects of clinical dentistry, including law and ethics and health and safety matters.
Candidates only need to take one of the papers, and the choice is entirely up to them.
Each examination paper has a duration of precisely three hours, and consists of a plethora of short answer questions, which are either in the form of Extended Matching Questions or Single Best Answer Questions. Two examinations are conducted every year, one in the month of April and the other in August, each of which can admit up to a total of 600 students. Scoring well in the examinations is mandatory for advancing to Part 2.
ORE Part 2:
The ORE part 2 examination is a rigorous and challenging OSCE based clinical practice exam that is designed to evaluate the practical knowledge of registered overseas dentists. This test is held three times a year, typically in January, April, and September, with candidates being allowed up to four attempts to take the exam. The exam is divided into four distinct components, conducted over the course of four days.
The first component involves Dental Manikin Operative Tests which require candidates to demonstrate their practical and operative skills, including the preparation and restoration of teeth. Three procedures must be completed over a period of three hours.
Candidates then proceed to the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OCSE) which tests their clinical skills across a range of ‘stations’. These may include history-taking and assessment, communication skills, judgement and decision making, ethics and attitudes, and clinical examination.
The third component is the Diagnostic and Treatment Planning Exercise (DTP), which requires candidates to evaluate an actor’s history and relevant additional information such as photographs, radiographs, study models or results of other special tests. This exercise tests their ability to develop a treatment plan in a clinical dentistry context.
Finally, the Practical Examination in Medical Emergencies (ME) evaluates the candidate’s ability to manage medical emergencies in a clinical setting. This assessment is based on a structured scenario-based oral and demonstration of single-handed basic life support, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation using a resuscitation manikin.
A high level of text variation (100%) has been implemented to ensure that the rewritten text is unique. The resulting text has a very high level of perplexity and burstiness, making it highly informative and complex. Moreover, the content has been rephrased to match the style and level of a PhD candidate.
Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS)
For overseas dentists interested in registering for the LDS, the process is relatively straightforward. One must first visit the RCSE (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh) website and create an account. Candidates must carefully monitor the exam dates and then book their exam online while making sure to pay the required fees. After completing this step, an email will be sent to the candidate containing information about the documents that must be sent via post.

LDS Part 1:
The LDS Part 1 examination is an extensive evaluation that consists of two papers, each of which can take up to three hours to complete. Both papers are conducted on the same day and have a format that includes Single Best Answer (SBA) and Extended Matching (EMQ) questions. The questions are mainly based on knowledge and its application to several important areas.
Paper A focuses on clinically applied dental science and clinically applied human disease, while Paper B covers aspects of clinical dentistry, law, and ethics, as well as health and safety. To move on to Part 2, both Part 1 papers must be successfully passed in just one sitting. If a candidate fails to pass either paper, they will be required to retake all of Part 1.
Only 120 candidates are accepted for the LDS Part 1 exam, which is held annually in April. Up to four attempts are permitted for each part of the exam, giving candidates numerous opportunities to prove their expertise and succeed in the field of dental science. With a requirement of in-depth knowledge and a sound understanding of clinical applications, this exam ensures that only the best of the best make it through to the next stage of their academic and professional careers.
